The Art of Coastal Home Remodeling: A Clarendon Hills Transformation
At Hyland Homes, we specialize in creating spaces that are both beautiful and functional. One of our recent projects in Clarendon Hills, Illinois, brought a stunning vision of coastal home remodeling to life. Inspired by their time in Connecticut, the homeowners wanted to infuse their home with the breezy elegance of coastal design while enhancing the functionality of every space.
What makes a coastal remodel stand out?
A true coastal-inspired home goes beyond just aesthetic updates—it’s about creating a sense of calm, balance, and timeless charm. For this project, we worked closely with the homeowners to craft a design that paired coastal elements with practical upgrades to improve the flow and livability of their home. Highlights from the remodel include…
Coastal curb appeal
A home’s exterior sets the tone for what’s inside. We embraced traditional coastal elements with a complete exterior transformation:
- Replacing the oval window above the front door with a crisp square design for a modern yet timeless look.
- Installing a cedar shake roof, copper gutters, and functional shutters to bring an East Coast charm to this Midwestern home.
- Adding carriage-house-style garage doors that tied the design together seamlessly.
Bathroom transformations for beauty and functionality
The home’s bathrooms needed serious attention to align with the overall design:
- The Jack and Jill bathroom was expanded into the dormer, creating additional space and incorporating mirrors to make the most of the sloped ceiling. Heated tile floors added comfort, while a sleek shower replaced the outdated tub.
- The master bathroom became a spa-like retreat, featuring a luxurious freestanding tub, custom cabinetry, and a reconfigured layout to improve functionality.
Interior updates that brighten the space
Inside the home, we made significant updates to achieve a light, cohesive feel:
- Replacing the dark cherry hardwood floors with white oak hardwood flooring to brighten and unify the space.
- Expanding and raising cased openings between rooms to create better flow and allow natural light to travel through the home.
- In the kitchen, eliminating heavy upper cabinets and introducing paneled white oak appliances gave the space an airy, open vibe.
Signature details that define coastal style
It’s the thoughtful details that truly capture the coastal aesthetic:
- Shiplap accents added texture and charm to the staircase and hallway.
- A cozy fireplace transformed the screen porch into an inviting year-round space.
- Grasscloth and trim in the dining room created a high-end, fabric-paneled effect.
Coastal design meets modern living
This Clarendon Hills home is now a stunning example of how coastal home remodeling can transform a space. By combining thoughtful design choices with functional upgrades, we brought the homeowners’ vision to life in a way that’s as practical as it is beautiful.
