Paint Finishes Explained

Color isn’t the only important decision when deciding to paint a space.

Painting is one of the most inexpensive and effective ways to update your space whether you are trying to sell your home, wanting to refresh a room, or just because. Spring is one of the best times to refresh, redecorate, and reorganize your home. It’s only natural to want to refresh your walls with a new paint color when you are able to leave your windows open and air out your home. But keep in mind that color isn’t the only decision you have to make when deciding to paint walls, trim, and/or doors.

Flat & Matte

A flat finish is best for ceilings. Flat or matte are best for rooms that don’t have a lot of traffic and bedrooms. A lot of brands that offer a flat finish are not washable, so tread lightly on this decision in an area that has a lot of traffic. Benjamin Moore offers a great premium matte product that has been shown the test of time to be cleanable. A flat finish also hides imperfections in your walls and ceilings.

Eggshell & Satin

A satin or eggshell finish is perfect where there is a lot of traffic, such as hallways, foyers, backdoor entrance, and family rooms. It also has just a hint of shine and can accentuate imperfections in walls. Make sure prep work is being done beforehand to ensure a smooth finish. Satin has also become more popular lately in kitchens, bathrooms, and on trim and window casing, especially when you want to just see architectural elements in a room.

Semigloss

A semigloss finish is best for trim, windows, and doors. Also good for bathrooms, kitchens, and kids room if the walls are in great, smooth condition and you don’t mind the extra shine.

Whichever finish you decide to move forward with, the quality of paint is also an important factor. At Hyland Homes we firsthand use Benjamin Moore products or Sherwin Williams if requested by the customer. Ready to refresh your space?
